A Perk that Works: Benefits of a Morning Coffee

The morning coffee(s) is a staple for most adults, and it turns out that it may do more than just wake you up. A recent World Health Organization study suggests a correlation between coffee and cancer prevention, perhaps disproving the assumption that coffee may cause bladder cancer. Even more, it’s also beneficial for those watching their weight.

Drink coffee before you workout

When you work a nine-to-five job, you probably have two choices on when you can work out: before work or after work. If you prefer morning workouts, you’re in luck. Health Magazine compiled a list of promising studies about caffeine and coffee. Some benefits include:

  • Burning more calories after exercise
  • Less pain during workouts
  • Muscle preservation and more fuel

Even more, coffee both pre- and post-workout may also reduce appetite. This ensures that those minutes burning calories aren’t negated by your cravings.

Make your coffee healthier

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind isn’t necessarily when you drink coffee but how. Foremost, too much of anything is never good. Chris Fear, blogger and nutritionist, believes your ultimate goal should be one organic, sugar-free, dairy-limited coffee a day to limit your caffeine and calorie intake.

On the other hand, Bulletproof blog pioneer David Asprey, also an advocate for primal diets like paleo, believes you should enhance your coffee. Ingredients such as Brain Octane and grass-fed, unsalted butter promote better satiety and brain function. Even though it adds more calories, you’ll end up eating less. Fatty, protein-rich foods and drinks decrease appetite.

Ultimately, as long as you don’t go overboard with sugar and caffeine, a morning coffee has its perks. So drink up!
